UK Government & Regulators

Bank of England

The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom. Standing at the centre of the UK's financial system, the Bank is committed to promoting and maintaining a stable and efficient monetary and financial framework as its contribution to a healthy economy. 

Corporation of London

The Corporation of London provides local government services for the City of London. It is committed to maintaining and enhancing the status of the City as the world's leading international financial and business centre. 

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)

DWP is the Government department responsible for welfare reform.  It delivers support and advice to people of working age, employers, pensioners, families, children and disabled people. 

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)

The DTI is the Government department which aims to create the best environment for business success in the UK. It helps people and companies become more productive by promoting enterprise, innovation and creativity. 

Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS)

The Financial Ombudsman Service is an independent body which provides consumers with a free service for resolving disputes with financial firms. 

Financial Services Authority (FSA)

The FSA is an independent body that regulates the financial services industry in the UK. 

Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) is the statutory fund of last resort for customers of financial services firms. They pay compensation if an authorised firm is unable to pay claims against it, usually because it is insolvent. 

Financial Services Practitioner Panel

The Financial Services Practitioner panel is a statutory body which represents the views and interests of regulated firms to the FSA, and monitors the FSA's effectiveness. 

Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO)

HMSO delivers a wide range of services to the public and government relating to the access and re-use of government information.  It is responsible for Crown copyright and advises on official publishing matters. 

HM Treasury (HMT)

The Treasury is the Government department responsible for formulating and implementing the UK Government's financial and economic policy. 

HM Revenue & Customs

HMRC is responsible for collecting the bulk of tax revenue, as well as paying Tax Credits and Child Benefits, and strengthening the UK's frontiers. 

Office of Fair Trading (OFT)

The Office of Fair Trading is the Government department which protects consumers and explains their rights.  It also ensures that businesses compete and operate fairly. 

National Statistics Online

National Statistics is the Government department responsible for producing a wide range of economic and social statistics. It also registers life events and holds the decennial census of the population. 

Parliament 

The UK Parliament is the highest legislative authority in the United Kingdom - it is the institution responsible for making and repealing UK laws.  The UK Parliament has three main functions; to examine proposals for new laws; to scrutinise government policy; and to debate the major issues of the day. 

UK Public Sector Information (Directgov)

Directgov is the place to turn for the widest range of government information and services.  As well as government departments, the site links through to relevant third parties which can offer additional advice and support.
