The IMA Annual Survey is the most comprehensive account of the UK investment management industry. It covers a broad range of themes, including client expectations and product demand, commercial structure and the regulatory environment. The latest edition, ‘Asset Management in the UK 2009-2010', shows that while the global economic crisis is still far from over, the industry is emerging in resilient fashion, with investment funds seeing a record year in 2009.
The Survey is based on questionnaire responses from 75 firms who between them managed £3 trillion in the UK, and on in-depth interviews with senior figures from 24 firms.
Four key themes emerged from the questionnaire and interviews:

A need for clearly-focused reform
The asset management industry accepts that the financial system requires reform, but would like this to take place in an internationally coordinated manner, which recognises the different roles of financial services sub-sectors. -
Concern about the UK as a financial centre
The UK remains a pre-eminent financial centre, but more needs to be done to secure this status in the longer term. Most firms we spoke to feel that business conditions in the UK deteriorated over the past year. -
Greater independence
The organisational structure of the industry is increasingly characterised by independent firms. Firms owned by insurance companies and retail and investment banks now account for less than 50% of UK-managed assets. -
Signs of a growing interest in solutions
Many firms expect to remain focused on component manufacture, but an increasing number are looking at the provision of investment solutions (ie. products which seek to meet specific liabilities or savings needs).
